Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands, is a sun-drenched paradise known for its turquoise waters, dramatic landscapes and warm Greek hospitality. Whether you’re a beach lover, history buff, foodie or simply in need of a relaxing getaway, Kefalonia offers something for everyone. We found there was so much to do and see on this beautiful island, and so would suggest a minimum stay of 5-7 days.
We found it somewhat remote and difficult to find content on the best things to do in Kefalonia. So here’s your guide to making the most of your visit.
Renting a car is a must do on the island if you want to make the most of your stay. Most corners of the isle can be reached within a few hours by car, so this is the best way to make the most of your time there. We would highly recommend using Pefanis Car Hire – they were an absolute dream. Extremely quick response time and more than happy to help. They offer very reasonable prices and the process from start to finish was seamless. No credit card needed!
TIP 💡 Please be aware that driving in Kefalonia (or most of Europe for that matter) is very different from the UK! Expect rugged roads, lack of signs/direction and endless speeding. Take care when driving on the right-hand side of the road.
Where to Stay in Kefalonia
We stayed in a gorgeous bohemian private villa located in the small village of Davgata. There is little to nothing going on here, however, we wanted a private stay that was still only 10-15 minutes’ drive from Argostoli. Our Airbnb was so magical we couldn’t not share. Our private villa was dotted with lemon, lime and olive trees—free for guests to pick and savour—bringing a simple, sun-soaked sense of peace that feels like a true Greek summer 🍋🍋🟩🫒
For a convenient escape, consider the capital, Argostoli, which boasts elegant hotels and vibrant nightlife. This is the hub of the island, with a lovely square and endless restaurants to choose from. If you are happy staying in the hustle and bustle, Argostoli is a very safe option.
The charming and luxurious village of Fiskardo in the north is famed for its pastel-coloured Venetian buildings and boutique accommodation, perfect for a romantic retreat. This area is slightly more expensive than others, so if your budget allows, we would definitely recommend.
If you’re after a quieter, more traditional experience, Assos is a picturesque spot perched between sea and mountains, offering family-run guesthouses with stunning views. It’s located towards the north of the island, and around a 50-minute drive from the capital.
For beach lovers, Lassi is ideal, with plenty of seaside resorts just steps from the sand. It’s notoriously known for its British popularity. It’s considered a top choice for British holidaymakers as it is a built-up, “strip-style” resort with many amenities and conveniences.

Best Beaches on the Island
- Myrtos Beach: Frequently ranked among the world’s most beautiful beaches, Myrtos is a must-see with its dramatic white cliffs and crystal-clear waters. We would recommend seeing it from the spectacular viewpoint, as opposed to spending any time on the beach itself. It can get overcrowded and parking is difficult.
- Antisamos Beach: Known for its lush green hills and vibrant blue sea, this beach is fantastic for swimming and snorkelling. It’s also famous as a filming location for “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.”
- Skala Beach: A long stretch of golden sand, perfect for families, with plenty of water sports and nearby tavernas.
- Vouti Beach: A secluded hidden gem located near the village of Zola. It is highly regarded for its turquoise, crystal-clear waters and tranquil atmosphere.
If you have time, or are looking for beaches off the beaten track and slightly less well known but equally beautiful, some local recommendations are Makris Gialos, Ai Helis, Petanoi, Evreti, Emplisi and Agia Lerousalim.

Where to Eat: Kefalonia’s Culinary Delights
No trip is complete without savouring the island’s traditional flavours. Let’s face it, one of the most important aspects of travel, is exploring the local cuisine.
In Argostoli, try Ladokolla Stin Plagia for grilled meats and local meze, and Vinaries Fish Restaurant for fresh catch. Fiscardo’s Tassia Restaurant serves up fresh seafood, including the famous Kefalonian meat pie and lobster pasta, with a view of the harbour. For a rustic experience, head to Rotsis Bakery for homemade local Greek sweet and savoury treats, where you must try mandoles (honey-coated almonds). Lighthouse Restaurant is a stand-out for us, where you can sit right by the water and choose your fresh fish straight from the day’s catch.
Further recommendations from kefalonian locals include Mel’s (Fast Food/Patisserie), Il Borgo (Mediterranean), Oinops (Wine Bar), O Mpotsolos & Alexandros (Tavern-Grill Houses).
Kefalonia invites you to slow down and truly feel—where wild, untamed beauty meets soulful traditions and food that nourishes more than just the body. This Ionian gem has a quiet way of capturing your heart ✨💘.
