We almost always hear about the wonders of Sa Pa and Ha Giang, which are undoubtedly beautiful regions of the Vietnamese Countryside. However, having only a limited time in Vietnam but still wanting to experience some of the quieter, more rural regions without the overwhelming travel distances, we discovered Mai Châu – Vietnam’s hidden countryside gem.

Mai Châu is in the North-West of Vietnam, situated in the Hoa Binh province and only a 3-hour drive from the bustling Capital city of Hanoi. Set in an idyllic valley surrounded by endless mountains and lush rice fields, Mai Châu offers a serene escape for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Rich in cultural diversity and home to six distinct ethnic minority groups, you can really immerse yourself in traditional village life. Unwind in the peaceful atmosphere and go back to the origins of what our souls yearn for – wholesome simplicity.

Why Mai Châu?

Vietnamese city hopping is a unique and memorable adventure filled with mopeds, markets, and incredible local food. It is exciting, chaotic, and unforgettable for first-time visitors. But Vietnam also offers slower, more meaningful experiences rooted in daily local life. Mai Châu provides a glimpse into this peaceful, authentic side of the country. It remains a hidden gem and a calm escape from the surrounding chaos.

Vietnam has undoubtedly become a hot-spot for tourists in recent years, some areas having more touristic influence than others. Mai Châu, whilst recently gaining some traction and interest online, still remains fairly untouched, away from the big crowds and the all too seen tourist traps. Having spent a few days in Mai Châu immersing in the culture and soaking up the endless 360-degree views, here are some of the top things we recommend to make the most out of your stay here.

TIP 💡The best time to visit Mai Châu is from March to May and September to November. These are generally the dryer seasons with reduced risk of rain and flooding

Have a Homestay Experience

To truly immerse in the culture, staying in a family-run homestay is the best decision you can make. Mai Châu is dotted with traditional stilt houses offering quirky and memorable accommodation options. We stayed at Mai Châu countryside homestay, with spacious wooden rooms and balconies overlooking rice fields and mountains. The morning and evening views were truly unforgettable. Most homestays also have restaurants serving freshly cooked, authentic food every day. Staying in a homestay enhances the experience of daily local life. It offers visitors a rare, meaningful, and authentic connection to the community.

Cycle amongst the rice fields

Most accommodation offers free cycle hire, making it easy to explore the region’s beautiful landscapes and villages. Cycle through valleys and quirky streets to discover local cafés, markets, and endless views of rice fields and mountains. Cycling is an eco-friendly and enjoyable way to explore freely without relying on scarce local transport. It is a must-do activity for visitors. Alternatively, affordable motorbike rentals allow you to explore further and discover hidden waterfalls, caves, and remote villages.

TIP 💡Explore the villages of Lac, Van and Pom Coong which are all nearby and easily accessible by bike. Hidden waterfalls and caves can also be explored if you’re feeling more adventurous
